Important move for ATMEA1 Reactor to be built in Turkey

October 30, 2013

Following the Turkish and Japanese Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA), signed on May 3rd 2013 which paved the way to Japan for “preferential negotiating rights” for the Sinop nuclear power plant project, the international consortium, of which Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) is a member, reached, on October 29th, a broad framework commercial agreement with the Government of the Republic of Turkey for the project.

This agreement called Host Government Agreement (HGA) delineates such matters as the scope of the cooperation for project implementation and for a feasibility study framework for building and operating 4 units of ATMEA1 reactor which is a state-of-the-art nuclear technology developed by ATMEA, a joint venture between MHI and AREVA.

“This agreement enables us to enter into the next stage towards the project materialization based on our ATMEA1 Generation III+ reactor, strongly supported by Turkish, Japanese and French Governments. This important milestone reached in Turkey will encourage many other countries worldwide to undertake new nuclear projects with our ATMEA1 technology” declared Andreas GOEBEL CEO of ATMEA.

The ATMEA1 is a 1.100 MWe class Generation III+, pressurized water reactor type, widely recognized for its extremely high reliability, which is considered by many countries for many other nuclear projects such as in Asia, South America and Europe. It has already been positively evaluated by the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) as well as by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), concluding that its design was complying with their national safety requirements.
